The title might shock you, but; I’m just going to come right out and say it – I thoroughly despise these two words; apologetics, and apologist.
I frankly couldn’t care less what their source words in the Greek language mean. These words have simply annoyed me to my core for many years now. If I could, I would wipe these two terms from the faith.
If you know nothing of Jesus and faith, what would you think of someone being called an apologist? I’m thinking, well, what is he apologizing for?
I’m not, nor will I ever be an apologist, and I have nothing whatsoever to do with the so-called apologetics. I suppose I’m swimming against the current here, I just simply cringe when I hear people called by these terms. Maybe I’m really reaching here, but I have to wonder, does God find these terms offensive? These terms are to me are more than a little bit offensive.
I write about Jesus; I have witnessed to others about Him – I am not in any way shape or form apologizing for Jesus! I have discussed, reasoned, and argued with many on the topic of Jesus and the Bible, attempting to persuade them on things concerning Jesus. I have pointed out false doctrines, and argued my case via the Bible why these doctrines (Such as replacement theology) are biblically wrong.
Jesus doesn’t need me or anyone else to defend Him, but making a case for Christ and/or defending Him is what many of us do – it is sound reasoning, and faith in the One who saved me, and His Word, not practicing the abysmal so-called apologetics. Reason, knowledge of the Bible, faith, proper context, hermeneutics, and sound doctrine – not apologetics.
I will not, nor have I for some time now referred to myself as a “Christian”. I am not one. Everyone and their brother claims; “I’m a Christian”. Except that when you speak to them, or see their social media posts, it is obvious that they are anything but. I am not, and will not be identified with these people – this doesn’t of course include those that truly are worshipers of Christ who choose to identify as Christians.
“Christians” routinely express their hatred for the Jewish people – many will also express their hatred for black people. White Nationalists will say the U.S. should be a white only nation. Some will pick and choose which parts of the Bible are true or just “stories”. Still others, are in the “business” of Jesus Christ – to make money.
Years ago, a friend of mine said to me, “I’m not religious, I’m just a Believer”.
I am just a Believer in Jesus Christ.
